Sleep apnea is a condition in which when a person sleeps he experiences pauses in the breathing pattern. Pauses in the breathing pattern can be due to an airway either collapsing or being obstructed by something. One of the biggest problems of this illness is that it usually goes undetected by physicians simply because the person experiencing it does so in his sleep and doesn’t really know that he has that problem. There are no blood tests through which a doctor can find out whether or not a person is suffering from sleep apnea. Pauses in breathing can cause less oxygen to go to the brain which can damage brain cells in the long run.
Sleep Apnea Causes
There can be several sleep apnea causes and they are usually concerned with blockage of the nasal passage or other airways. One of the biggest causes is sinus infections or any other type of infection which causes the body to create mucus in the airways. Sleep apnea can be caused by swollen tonsils which do not allow the air to pass through the throat easily. People who are obese can have extra fat on the walls of the trachea causing the air passage to narrow down considerably making it difficult to breathe. As people age, the brain slows down and is not sharp enough to send adequate signals to the muscles to keep them from relaxing at night thereby blocking the passage of air. Sleep apnea causes are not usually extremely severe and can be dealt with easily.
Sleep Apnea Symptoms
Sleep apnea symptoms unfortunately cannot be experienced by people who suffer from this problem simply because the symptoms manifest only when the person is unconscious. Sleep apnea symptoms are many and one of the most common and apparent one is snoring loudly. Patients suffering from apnea may also cough, or make gasping sounds while they sleep because they are struggling to get air. Sleep apnea symptoms can only be picked up by someone who is sharing a bed with a person suffering from this illness. A few other sleep apnea symptoms which are not unique to this problem are headaches in the morning, irritability on waking up, feeling of dryness in the mouth and throat and in some cases mild memory loss. Sometimes sleep apnea may also cause drowsiness in the day due to the lack of good quality sleep at night. In certain cases, there can also be Sleep Apnea Bedwetting due to inability to control while in deep sleep. Sleep Apnea Bedwetting can happen in adults and children.
Sleep Apnea Treatments
More than treating sleep apnea, a patient has to discover and treat the underlying cause. In severe cases, sleep apnea treatments can include surgery and breathing devices but a lot of times apnea can be treated by making very basic lifestyle changes. Sleep apnea remedies include losing weight for obese people, cutting out alcohol and other sleep inducing substances, quitting smoking and treating sinusitis. Mouth pieces and breathing devices too can help cure apnea but they are only effective for the time period you use them. You can also buy special beds for sleep apnea treatment such as raised or adjustable beds.
In severe cases, surgery is required where the air passages have to be widened to allow for the free flow of air.
